Nakaya is a small, hand crafted offshoot of the high quality Japanese manufacturer, Platinum. Some models in fact appear in both company's lines, with the Nakaya offerings being tweaked versions of the regular products from Platinum.
The Tame-Nuri, offered only by Nakaya, is a hard rubber (ebonite) pen painstaking painted with many layers of hard, durable, Japanese lacquer know as "Urushi." The finish is like that of old time autos, with depth. The photo shows how the base color shows through over time.
The pens are very light for their size and employ a more finely worked version of the Platinum nib. It is not truly flexible, as in vintage pens, but it does have give, making it a delight to move across the page. The pen is elegant in its simplicity, and available in several sizes, as well as with or without pocket clip. I have the non clip pen, and rest it on the desk on a "pillow" carved from wood and painted with urushi lacquer as well. Very feng shui! The converter insode allows you to refill from bottled ink, or you can use PLatinum brand (only) refills. As Platinum inks are somewhat understated, I usually use a more satured color from other makers. The converter, by the way, is available as a plain see through type, or painted with what the Japanese call "Maki-E." This is what I have and it is always a nice "surprise" to open the pen at refill time.
Smooth, light, hand made, and $460.00 A great pen.
